Getting a USPTO ODP API key
People search for USPTO API keys because official USPTO data products require registration. This page is a high-level map. It is not a scrape of USPTO systems. Follow USPTO’s own instructions.
Official path (high level)
- Start at the USPTO Open Data Portal.
- Register / sign in with a USPTO.gov account when the product requires it.
- Complete MFA as USPTO currently requires (often ID.me-linked account flows).
- Request the API key for the specific USPTO data product you need, using USPTO’s key manager or product docs.
USPTO may change these steps. Use the official portal, not this page, as the source of truth.
Friction for agents
MFA and identity-proofed USPTO.gov accounts are a poor fit for unattended bots. Official USPTO filing systems are separately off-limits: USPTO regulations ban AI bots from accessing the USPTO online filing system.
When FreeTrademarkAPI’s key is enough
For the knockout path, you do not need a USPTO ODP key. FreeTrademarkAPI will issue its own API key for free US knockout search (mark + class). How keys will be issued is TBD at launch — there is no dashboard URL yet.
Filing and support orders still require a human contact email, X402 where applicable, and US trademark attorney review. Bots do not file at USPTO through this product.
